ABSTRACT

This article aims to evaluate the possible antidepressant effect of the Ghrita prepared from the combination of these plants and to provide probable scientific explanations for using medicated Ghrita (ghee) in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Herbs for Ghrita like Marsilea quadrifolia, Lawsonia inermis, Mimosa pudica, Piper betle were collected freshly during the month of June. One part Kalka (herb bolus), 4 parts pure cow ghee, and 16 parts Dravadravya were used to make Ghrita (Swarasa). Anti-depressant potential of the Ghrita was evaluated by forced swimming, tail suspension, locomotor activity, rota-rod test (motor co-ordination), elevated plus maze (EPM) model, and hole board test were used to assess the Ghrita's anti-depressant potential. According to the Irwin schedule, Gritha medication reduces alertness but has no effect on other parameters, but imipramine treatment reduces responsiveness, alertness, grooming, and writing reflexes to some extent. Following 14 days of therapy with medicinal Ghrita, the immobility time in the forced swim test and the tail suspension test were reduced by 29% and 42%, respectively. In the rotarod test, it had no significant effect on muscle gripping ability when compared to control animals, whereas imipramine produced a significant result. It was observed that the medicinal Gritha significantly (p<0.05) decreases the locomotor activity in actophotometer test and head dips counts in hole board test as compared to control at the end of 14 days study in a 5 minute observation. Ghrita increased the number of entries in the elevated plus maze by 50% and the time spent in the open arm by 72%. The results of this investigation suggest the possible antidepressant potential of medicinal Ghrita.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In developing countries like India, low birth weight is a major public health issue. It is a leading cause of disease and mortality in infants. Low birth weight can be avoided by identifying at-risk pregnant women and taking the necessary precautions. Methods: From January to June 2019, a facility based retrospective case control study was conducted among pregnant women who gave birth at the hospitals. The information was gathered from the antenatal care files and the delivery room register and records. SPSS version 24.0 was used to process the data. To find an independent predictor of low birth weight, researchers used binary and multiple bivariate logistic regressions. Result: An aggregate of 450 neonatal birth records were reviewed in this study of which 150 were low birth weight babies and 300 were of normal birth weight. The mean SD and median [IQR] for birth weight of case group was [2.04kg, 2.2[1.8-2.4] kg] and that for control [3.14kg, 3.0[2.7-3.3] kg] respectively. Conclusion: Preterm delivery, mothers with hypothyroidism have an increased chance of having low birth weight babies whereas mothers with regular antenatal check-up and mothers with primary and secondary education have a lesser possibility of having low birth weight babies.

ABSTRACT

The plant Hyptis is an effective medicinal herb and a well known medicinal plant in herbal world. The present study was aimed to investigate the α-amylase inhibition and antioxidant activities of chloroform fraction of H. suaveolens. Chloroform fraction of H. suaveolens was screened for α-amylase inhibition activity by 3, 5- dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA) method respectively. and antioxidant activity was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2- picryl-hydrazile (DPPH) free radical scavenging, Super oxide radical Scavenging, nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging, and 2.2’-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazole-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging assays. The chloroform fraction of H. suaveolens showed effective α-amylase inhibition activity (IC50 57.34μg/ml). Chloroform fraction demonstrated significant antioxidant activity in all the in vitro antioxidant models. Moreover, the chloroform fraction was found to be extremely effective in scavenging DPPH (IC50 57.51 μg/ml) while compared to super oxide (IC50 61.36 μg/ml), NO (IC5076.3 μg/ml) and ABTS radical (IC50 93.16 μg/ml) scavenging activity. In conclusion, from the results of present study it is established that antioxidant and alphaamylase inhibitory activity of chloroform fraction of H. suaveolens may contribute in its earlier observed antidiabetic potential.

ABSTRACT

Malignant tumors have been associated with the development of nephrotic syndrome. We report a 73-year-old man with nephrotic syndrome who had a malignant stromal gastric tumor. Curative resection of the sarcoma resulted in remission of the nephrotic syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Congenital thymic cysts are uncommon and often misdiagnosed as either branchial cleft or cystic hygromas. This paper presents the case of a male child, who presented with a soft, fluctuating mass in the left side of his neck. Surgical excision revealed an ectopic thymic cyst. The histopathologic features of thymic cysts are diagnostic. Ectopic thymic tissue may be an infrequent finding, but it should be included in the differential diagnosis of neck masses, especially in children.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare tumor with an incidence of 0.5 to 4%. Preoperative differentiation from benign adenoma is very difficult. Several features, though nonspecific, have been used in differentiating parathyroid carcinoma from the adenoma. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective analysis during the period of nine years, four cases of parathyroid carcinoma were diagnosed on the basis of per-operative local invasion and on histological evidence of capsular invasion and vascular invasion. RESULT: We have different observations to make. Diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma which was done on the basis of intra operative suspicion only. One patient died on 6th post operative day due to development of pancreatitis. At the follow-up of two years there was no local recurrence or distant metastasis. CONCLUSION: It is preferable to have a high index of suspicion for parathyroid carcinoma when these features are present than to miss the opportunity for surgical cure by failing to consider it in the differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to compare the clinical, neurophysiological, radiological and prognostic features of myasthenia gravis with and without thymoma. 37 patients with myasthenia gravis (27 males, 10 females), with age range of 4.5 to 72 (mean 39) years, were managed at a tertiary care centre in India. Four patients were below 15 years of age and 6 above 55 years. Most of the patients were in stage II (34). There were 2 patients in stage III and 1 in stage I. 27 patients underwent thymectomy. Thymoma was detected in 10 cases. The decrement in patients with thymoma ranged between 11 and 62% (mean 27.9%) and nonthymoma group 10-75% (mean 28%). CT scan of thorax revealed mediastinal mass in 5 out of 10 cases of thymoma and 2 out of 27 patients without thymoma. Outcome of myasthenia gravis with thymoma was worse than without thymoma at 1 year followup. Severity of illness, extent of decrement, lack of facilitation, duration of illness and age of the patients were not related to the outcome. It is concluded the clinical and neurophysiological changes in myasthenia gravis with and without thymoma do not differ. However, patients with thymoma have a worse outcome.
